What is an overhead travelling crane used for?
An overhead travelling crane is used for lifting, moving and positioning heavy loads in a safe and efficient manner within a fixed working area, usually within a warehouse, manufacturing plant, workshop or industrial facilities. Overhead travelling cranes are particularly ideal for moving and handling large materials through production stages, as well loading and unloading, transporting heavy or bulky objects to and from storage or docking areas, and moving components along assembly lines.
How often is overhead crane training required?
There is no legal fixed interval as to how often an overhead crane training course refresher should take place, however, training should be refreshed regularly to ensure all overhead travelling crane operators are competent in using the machinery efficiently and safely. It will also ensure that they are adhering to current safety standards and many industries follow best practice by undertaking a refresher course approximately every 3 to 5 years. Refresher training may be required to take place sooner than this if an operator has been involved in an incident, changes job role or hasn’t used the equipment for a while.
Do you need a licence to operate an overhead crane?
You don’t need a formal licence, in the sense of, for example, you’d have an official driving licence to drive a car, however, UK law dictates that anyone operating an overhead crane must be trained and competent to do so. Taking an accredited overhead crane training course, such as the one offered by PLT Training, ensures that operators are compliant and competent in using the equipment both safely and efficiently.
What sort of price can I expect to pay when purchasing an overhead travelling crane?
An overhead travelling crane can cost from anywhere between £11,000 to £15,000 or more depending on things like the safe working load (SWL) and span of the machine.
