Learning Objectives
Counterbalance forklift truck training is divided into two sections: Theory and Practice.
Theory
- To understand why forklift and counterbalance training is important.
- To understand relevant legislation:
- Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
- PUWER 1998 and LOLER 1998
- To learn the principles of counterbalance operation, including rated capacity, load centres, and causes of instability.
- To apply the Operator’s Safety Code
This section is completed with a theory test.
Practical Counterbalance Forklift Training
In this section, delegates will practice with a standard counterbalance forklift until they can successfully:
- Perform pre-use checks and safe refuelling/battery charging.
- Operate the counterbalance forklift using basic and advanced steering techniques.
- Use hydraulic controls for stacking, de-stacking, and vehicle loading.
- Work safely with racking systems and free-standing stacks.
This section is completed with a practical skills test to demonstrate safe operation.
Who Should Attend?
This course is available in four modes:
- Novice course: for new or inexperienced counterbalance forklift operators
- Experienced: for experienced operators with no formal training
- Refresher: for operators qualified over 3 years ago
- Conversion: for operators who hold a lift truck certificate on a similar machine and would like to convert to a counterbalance forklift qualification.
This training is suitable for individuals pursuing a career in warehousing, logistics, manufacturing, or any industry where forklift operation is required.
Counterbalance forklift training is also suitable for supervisors or team leaders who oversee forklift operations and want to understand safe working practices.
Counterbalance Forklift Uses:
Counterbalance forklift are the most common lift trucks operated in the UK. They are designed and engineered to be able to operate indoors and outdoors whilst being able to lift between 1 to 48 tonnages of loads. Loads can come in different sizes, but a Counterbalance forklift adaptability enables it to alter the attachment from forks to other attachments suited for the task which is a bonus.
Main areas of Counterbalance forklift truck training:
The set up of this course is split into the three areas which are the Theory, Pre-Inspection and Practical.
- During the theory our instructors goes through the key relevant Health & Safety legislations, and the specific information regarding safety operation of the Counterbalance forklift.
- Pre-Inspection of the Counterbalance forklift helps delegates to identify the importance of carrying out checks before operating the truck, and the importance of reporting defects.
- The practical element focus is on practicing to operate the truck safely and correctly accordingly to what the task is.
